The United States verdict to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima was strictly military measure intended to frighten the Soviet Union in the post-Second-World-War era as well as to force Japan’s absolute surrender. On August sixth and ninth, 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were annihilated by the atomic bombings. These were the first atomic bombs ever used in warfare.

It is commonly thought that the purpose of dropping the bombs, were intended to end war with Japan. However, they were also dropped to threaten the Soviet Union. The bombing on Japan permitted them to accept their total surrender, also known as the Potsdam agreement. The Potsdam agreement was a military agreement between the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics who were in a three-way plan to rebuild Germany. The Japanese military was estimated to about 5,000,000 men. Their men were spread over various countries, which caused a plummet in trade with their allies (Doc A). Prior to 1945, the United States military objective was to prepare for the complete surrender of Japan. The plans of the United States were prepared without dependence on the atomic bomb, because it had not yet been tested in New Mexico (Doc A).

At the Yalta conference, President Roosevelt asked Josef Stalin for USSR support in the war with Japan (Doc D). At the time, Roosevelt was sure that the United States would earn victory easily without Soviet help. He believed that Japan would have to be invaded (Doc C).When Truman entered presidency, Truman said a Soviet invasion of the Japanese was unnecessary. As World War II came to an end, two new superpowers arose the United States and the Soviet Union. The Atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was world-shaking news (Doc E). The United States didn’t need Russian participation in the war because Japan’s surrender was already done (Document E). Japan was essentially defeated because of all the previous blows
