Gender is such a familiar part of daily life that it usually takes a deliberate disruption of our expectations of how women and men are supposed to act to pay attention to how it is produced (Lorber, pg.54). Perhaps the first notion of sexual dominance between man and woman came in kindergarten when we would not allow girls to play sports with us. We believed their strengths were inferior to us and they would just fall and cry while playing the sport. As men we are thought that women are a weak sex and they will always depend on us to protect them. If that is what most of us are thought as little children all the men in power created a society to have the same beliefs. Because patriarchy is male-identified, when most women look out on the world they see themselves reflected as women in a few narrow areas of life such as “caring” occupations and personal relationships (Johnson, pg.167). So for women to have equal rights in a male-dominant society would be a tremendous uphill battle.

“The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpation's on the part of man toward woman, having a direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world” (Gordon, pg.512).

Many husbands and sons left to fight the war as demand from factories kept growing. Soon the government found themselves seriously considering hiring women to fill labor intensive manly roles. Over the next few years the women’s decision to work showed the nation women and men should be treated as equals. It was the females time to shine. They fulfilled leadership roles and supported their families at the same time. Women showed tremendous strength building a work force America or any other nation had never seen before.
