Enron Ethical Issue

After reading and watching this information about Enron fraud case, in my opinion, Watkins chose truth and community to reply loyalty and individual when she faced the ethical dilemmas. She wrote down what she knew in her memo and put it to public because she did not want to do these “dirty” deals anymore and she also did not want investors to cheat by Enron.

When Watkins firstly found Enron’s fraud at 1996, she just moved to Enron International department. She did not stand out to say it because her loyalty. As she said, she had a really happy time at the first three years in Enron, and she really like this company and her collages. However, when she turned back to Broadband, she found that thing was more horrible than what she thought before. Thus, she got up the courage and reported it to the management. Nevertheless, facing the truth, they chose to keep silence. Then, she knew the only way to save her firm was to publish her memo to public.

For me, I think that Watkins’ respond is not just based on her responsibility and brave but also based on her family culture and faith. For a vice president, Watkins knows that a company’s CEO has to have the basis moral line and social responsibility; thus, she knew it was time to publish the truth when her boss chose to keep quit for company’s ethical issue. On the other hand, Watkins’ family culture and faith is also an essential factor for her respond in this case. As we know Watkins’s mother is a retired business teacher and her father is a descendant of a former Houston mayor. Furthermore, Watkins is also a member for a church. Based on these backgrounds, Watkins knows that she has responsibility to choose truth and community when she faces ethical dilemma.
