Organization as Systems

Introduction

In this SLP I have read all the background information that pertains to open and closed systems, and I have done some additional research to understand organization as systems. I will provide a brief definition of open and closed systems; share my thoughts on DreamWorks Animation being an open system; and give an example of a closed system.

Open and Closed Systems

A systems view considers an organization as a set of interacting functions that acquire inputs from the environment, process them, and then release the outputs back to the external environment (Daft, 2001). Systems have boundaries that separate systems from their environment. A system that interfaces and interacts with its environment by receiving inputs from and delivering outputs to the outside is called an open system. The extremely porous and previous boundary in which they possess, allows interaction across it’s boundary, by which new ideas and information is cooperatively and accessibly absorbed. This allows the incorporation to diffuse new ideas, which are viable. There is a constant exchange of feedback with their environment, the feedback is analysed, internal systems are adjusted, then the necessary information is transmitted back out to the environment. The closed system does not depend on the external environment. They rely primarily on internal organizational process and dynamics to account for organizational, group, and individual behaviours. Organizations that have closed boundaries often are unhealthy, and many times they do have some form of input or output to the external environment.
