A few months after his enlightenment the Buddha founded an order of monks, and later on nuns. The purpose of this order was twofold. Its primary purpose was to provide a community that would give the optimum opportunity for its members to practice the Dharma and attain Nirvana. Its secondary purpose was to transmit the Dharma and be a witness to its transforming power.

Monasticism refers to the lifestyle practiced by religious clergy in several religions. The monastic lifestyle often involves the renunciation of worldly pursuits and possessions in order to concentrate on developing one's spirituality.

Buddhist Monasticism is the state of being secluded from the world in order to fulfil religious vows. Buddhist Monasticism is one of the earliest surviving forms of organised monasticism in the history of religion.  The Buddhist Monastic order is divided into two assemblies, the male (bhikklu) and the female (bhikkluri).  It is also one of the most fundamental institutions of Buddhism.

When a person wishes to join the Buddhist order, he is first ordained as a novice.  He is asked to shave off his hair and put on a robe appropriate to Monastic tradition, which he has entered.  An ordained member of the order is provided with shelter, food, clothing medical cares.  His life is secure though not luxurious.  Most of a Buddhist monk’s life is based around study, meditation, the performance of religious services and the performance of assigned tasks for the maintenance of the monastic institution.

Chief priorities of a Buddhist Monastry include training and support of resident Monastic community and teaching people about the practice of Buddhas and their religion.  Also, Buddhist Monastries known as Vihara, emerged sometime around the 4th century BC.  In modern times, living a settled life in a monastery has become the most common lifestyle for Buddhist monks and nuns across the globe.       [pic 2]
