Proposed Disaster Resilient Facility in Marikina

Section 1. Project Relevance and Need

  1. Describe how your project addresses the problem.

As Earth’s population grow, more and more heat sources are produced, therefore global warming is gradually but steadily altering the climate. In effect, weather changes become abrupt, and more destructive than before. With all the recent incidents of heavy rainfall, earthquakes and other tragedies, the lack of appropriate evacuation centers for immediate shelter becomes apparent. Basketball courts and school building are almost always the choice of place to stay for the evacuees, hampering the real purpose of these structures.

The proposed disaster resilient facility is a means of response to the worsening effects of the aforementioned disasters. Since climate change cannot exactly be prevented, at least a temporary solution can be provided to the affected by these disasters in the form of an evacuation building. It is to serve as a short-term relocation site for the people affected, and still recovering from the damages and aftermath of a disaster. After or even before disaster hits an area, evacuation is the primary step that needs to be fulfilled, and a visual dilemma is where they will be brought, so an evacuation building seems to be the right type of project to answer to this problems.

  1. Demonstrate the need for your project. Describe why it is important to carry out this work.

Human beings are the main recipients of the negative effects of climate change caused by global warming that ironically, is also caused by people.  When disaster strikes a country, many citizens lose their loved ones, properties and their homes. Since Filipinos are not ready enough to address problems like flood and natural disasters, the only way to prevent or alleviate is to give or provide a sanctuary or a building made for relocating evacuees instead of just bringing them to make-shift evacuation centers.

With all the obvious and destructive changes that the planet Earth is undergoing right now which cannot be ignore, humanity should really begin taking action in preserving the environment, and do it seriously. It can be said that this project is timely and practical to consider, and a form of preparation for disasters to come.

  1. Provide the evidence to support the need for this project (e.g research evidence/statistics on your target population and the issue being addressed).

Filipinos are known as being resilient and has generous spirit, in times of down they can regain, in times of disaster they can recover. The water-proof spirit of Filipino spirit became ubiquitous: that was when typhoon Haiyan hits and wipe the central Leyte, the Tacloban city that affects almost 100% of the building structures, still after a year they have all recovered and moved on.
