Systematic Review Analysis

Evidence-based practice, as defined by Polit and Beck (2012) is “a clinical problem-solving strategy that emphasizes the integration of best available evidence from disciplined research with clinical expertise and patient preferences” (p. 727). Evidence-based practice requires a solid foundation in the form of integrated research evidence referred to as systematic review. Systematic review is a synopsis of primary studies, which includes exact statement of objectives, resources, and procedures that has been organized according to specific and reproducible methodology (Greenhalgh, 1997). Because a systematic review serves as a foundation for evidence-based practice, it is important to determine the accuracy of such. Also a systematic review must contain relevant information applicable to clinical practice. A systematic review article will be analyzed herein and the article selected for this purpose is Enhancing Communication in Surgery Through Team Training Interventions: A Systematic Literature Review, by Gillespie, Chaboyer, and Murray.

Clinical Question

The report clearly identified the problem, which is communication failure in the surgical team. Operating room requires teams to provide patient care. Each member of the surgical team functions interdependently to complete tasks effectively. Teamwork requires communication among surgical team members to promote patient safety and deliver a higher quality of care. In addition to communication, teamwork also entails shared situational awareness among the team members to perform as a cohesive group. The purpose of the systematic review was stated in the article, which is to evaluate the results of team training interventions used in the operating room (Gillespie, Chaboyer, & Murray, 2010). The evaluation of training interventions effectiveness will aid in finding a solution to communication failure that jeopardizes patient safety in a critical environment such as the operating room. Communication failure is an important topic in health care because it affects patient safety. Identifying effective strategies to enhance communication in a team environment can improve the quality of care the patient receives in the operating room.

Search Strategy and Quality Appraisal

The researchers conducted a comprehensive search for nursing and psychology literatures from online databases: ProQuest, CINAHL, and MEDLINE. The terms used for the search were operating room and team, surgery and team, and operating room and team training, which are broad enough to retrieve as many studies possible. Initial search yielded 854 articles, which were narrowed down to 18 after assessment of the setting and presence of team intervention. The study must have occurred in the operating room for accurate outcome measures. Team interventions include activities
