Physical & Chemical Properties

Substance: Mg (magnesium)

Color: Shiny silver

Odor: none

Effects of heat:

-In test tube 1 with just the Mg when heated nothing happened.

-In test tube 2 with the Mg mixed with water, when heated nothing happened.

-In test tube 3 with Mg mixed with HCL it started to sizzle and bubble.

-In test tube 4 with Mg mixed with NaOH it lost a little of its silver color and the solution turned a milky white color.

Solub. Or reaction w/cold H2O: No reaction or solub.

Solub. or reaction w/hot H2O: No reaction or solub.

Litmus test:

-Test tube 2 with water:

-Red- turned a little bluish

-Blue- turned a whitish color.

-Test tube 3 with HCL:

-Red- turned blue.

-Blue- turned pinkish purple

-Test tube 4 with NaOH:

-Red- turned blue.

-Blue- no change

Dilute HCL: Mg mixed with HCL it started to sizzle and bubble.

Dilute NaHO: Mg mixed with NaOH it lost a little of its silver color and the solution turned a milky white color.

Substance: Cu (copper)

Color: Shiny copper color

Odor: none

Effects of heat:

-In test tube 1 with just the Cu when heated nothing happened.

-In test tube 2 with the Cu mixed with water, when heated nothing happened.

-In test tube 3 with Cu mixed with HCL the solution turned a greenish color and the copper lost some of its shininess and lightened a bit in color.

-In test tube 4 with Cu mixed with NaOH the copper turned a dark color and a strange odor was produced.

Solub. Or reaction w/cold H2O: No reaction or solub.

Solub. or reaction w/hot H2O: No reaction or solub.

Litmus test:

-Test tube 2 with water:

-Red- turned a little bluish

-Blue- turned a redish

-Test tube 3 with HCL:

-Red- turned blue.

-Blue- turned pinkish

-Test tube 4 with NaOH:

-Red- turned blue.

-Blue- very little change.

Dilute HCL: Cu mixed with HCL the solution turned a greenish color and the copper lost some of its shininess and lightened a bit in color.

Dilute NaHO: Cu mixed with NaOH the copper turned a dark color and a stra...
