Summary. This paper explores the ethical dilemma that exists with the Columbia Packing Company, in which the company claims to have no prior knowledge of its many health code violations found by City officials. Part One of the paper provides a brief history of the company, as well as the company's initial statement regarding its alleged code violations. Part Two explains the discrepancy that exists between the company's public image and mission versus the unethical actions it has taken. Part Three discusses the recommendations and solution options. Part Four concludes the paper by reviewing the ethical dilemma and reflecting on the solution options.

Part I: The Organization

The Columbia Packing Company is a family owned meat packing business that was established in 1913 by Josef Ondrusek. Ondrusek created the company to provide a quality product that consumers deserved. The company also claims that it has “gained a solid reputation of quality and dependability in the food industry” (Columbia Packing Company, 2003).The company attitude is that “we believe business goes where it is invited and stays where it is well treated” (Columbia Packing Company, 2003). On January 23, 2012, Columbia Packing Company issued the following statement (2012) in response to claims that it had been allowing toxic waste to pour into public waters in Dallas, Texas:

Columbia Packing Co., Inc is a family owned business with a strong compliance history in a very regulated industry. It has been operating for nearly 100 years and is a pillar in the community participating in numerous area events and supporting area charities. It has approximately 100 employees at its plant. Columbia has never and would never intentionally engage in the activities recently alleged in the media. It was surprised by the allegations raised last week and was previously unaware of any such concerns. When notified of the potential issues, it fully cooperated with the government officials to answer any questions and to take any necessary action. Columbia ceased operation pending approval from the governmental agencies to resume its normal operation. Columbia appreciates the support of its customers and the community during this time and looks forward to continued operation and participation in the community. (p. 1)

The Columbia Packing Company claimed to be surprised and have no prior knowledge of any code violations. Research and evidence outlined in this essay indicates that a discrepancy exists between what the company claims and what officials discovered upon investigation of the Columbia Packing Company.
