Limitations of Women

Since the dawn of man, men and women have been separated. Men have always been

the traditional hunter, while women have tended to the food preparation and childbearing. One of

the first cases of women being nearly as equal as men is in Sparta, in Greece. Women in Sparta were educated and trained in the same schools as men, and women who died in childbirth were seen as bigger heroes than men who died in war. For hundreds of  years, women have faced limitations and equality problems. It was only recently that women have overcome these issues, and are now equal with their male counterparts.

In modern America, and many other western worlds, women are allowed an equal opportunity to get an education as men; however, it was not always this way. As illustrated in Disappointment is the Lot of Women, "It was not easy to obtain an education in the early 1900's. I was disappointed when I came to seek a profession worthy an immortal being—every employment was closed to me, except those of the teacher, the seamstress, and the housekeeper. In education, in marriage, in religion, in everything, disappointment is the lot of women." (Stone). Lucy Stone expresses her disdain for how only men were allowed into college, and when women were, they had gender specific roles in the college. Four women were allowed to attend Oberlin College in 1837, the first college to allow women to be enrolled in graduate school. Even though women could attend college in 1837, it was rare, and almost all women were declined to attend college.

As opposed to the 1800's, women in the westernized world have an equal opportunity to get into college. Currently, in America, sixty percent of the Bachelor's degree holders are women. This gap isn't because women are more studious than men, or because less men apply. Men and women have different mindsets on student loans and owing money. More men would rather not owe thousands of dollars to banks, so instead, they don't attend college and get a full time job in order to survive. Women, on the other hand, generally will take the student loan debt and complete at least two years of college, so they can get a better paying job and pay off the loans. Unfortunately, not every country is as allowing as the United States or England is with women and education. The United Nations has declared that everybody, regardless of race or gender, has the right to an education, but in Yemen, the country with the biggest gender gap, not every woman attends school. Literacy in women is fifty-five percent, one of the worst in the world, and less than one percent of women graduate from highschool.
