Middle to Late Childhood

Families and Peers

Families:

*Developmental Changes in Parent-child relationships

Studies show that as children get older parents spend less time with them.

Specifically one study found that it was less than half as much time spent with their children ages 5 to 12 doing things such as: care giving, instruction, reading, talking and playing.

Parents may be spending less time with their children at this age however they still play an important role. Their role now becomes:

1. Supporting and stimulating their academic achievement

2. As well as encouraging out of school activities

*Discipline

At this point discipline also changes

1.Children receive less physical discipline such as spanking

2.Parents now begin to use deprivation of privileges, appeals to their self esteem, comments designed to increase their sense of guilt, and statements showing the child is now responsible for their own actions.

Parents continue to exercise general supervision and control, but the children are now allowed to engage in moment to moment self-regulation. This is called Co regulation.

A key developmental task at this point is that children move toward autonomy by learning to relate to adults outside of the family on a regular basis, such as their teachers. Autonomy is self-directing freedom and independence; especially moral independence.

*Parents as Managers

During middle to late childhood parents become managers of their Childs opportunities. They monitor their behavior and establish and arrange their social lives.

Mothers are most likely to take on this role.

The most important family management practices are:

1. Maintaining a structured and organized family environment by establishing routines for things such as homework, chores, and bedtime.

2. Effectively monitoring their behavior.

If these are done well they relate to students grades and self responsibility in a positive way.
