Why Students Drop Out of School

It was reported by The Education Trust, which is a Washington-based nonprofit group, that almost 37% of students dropped out of college in 2005. However, the rate of college dropouts is tending to be higher in recent years. Mary Beth Marklein, a reporter in USA Today, reports that only 53 percent of four-year university students gradated smoothly, and this percent seems to be lower in some regions. Why do so many students drop out of college? I think there are three main reasons.

First, some students flunk out. As we know, most students who enroll in university intend to earn a degree. However, some of them are too lazy to devote enough time to study; instead, they indulge in video games or the Internet, which leads to absence in class. The neglect in studying brings on bad grades which makes students flunk out.

Second, some students leave college voluntarily. We can see many students really aren’t interested in studying in college as they enroll in a university just because of their parents wishes. All of them don’t desire a higher education, and they think they are studying as an assignment from their parents. When they find something more suitable than studying in a university, such as being a professional game player, it is possible that they drop out, and then do something they like.

Finally, some students don’t have enough money to continue studying. As the cost for college has become higher and higher in recent years, some students may need to work instead of study for survival. For example, one of my friends, Jack, had to drop out of school because his family couldn’t afford his tuition, and his sister Lucy is a high school student that will enter a university this year. Jack wants to lighten the family’s load, so he chose to work for his sister’s and parents’ sake. This phenomenon is very common in China; many students drop out of school to support their family.
