JavaScript and Java applet seem to run opposite of each other and slightly different. However, they both are great programs to add to any website to make them run smoothly.

According to "The Java Tutorials" (1995), A Java applet runs remotely on the client browser which causes some restrictions when using it. There are advantages and disadvantages when using an embedded program on HTML pages. With Java applet, it cannot access the system resources on a local computer. These applets are designed to make a website more exciting and entertaining than anything else. A Java plug-in is needed in order to view a website that is using a Java applet. Therefore, a visitor to the site must have Java downloaded on their computers before they can view any part of a Java applet. That is just one of the disadvantages but fortunately most people already have Java downloaded on the computers.

As mentioned earlier, there are advantages and disadvantages when using a Java Applet. Java applets can run on Windows, Mac and even a Linux platform. There are some Java applets that will not work on a Mac. The reason is the way the Java Plug-in software interfaces with browsers on the Mac. For the most part if you already have Java Plug-in downloaded on your computer, you can view all versions of applets. Of course, having the latest download does ensure there are not any problems when viewing a site that does use a Java applet. According to "The Java Tutorials" (1995), these applets are now supported by most browsers such as Mozilla, Google chrome, IE. An applet must be a subclass of the java.applet.Applet class. The Applet class provides the standard interface between the applet and the browser environment.

The disadvantages when using a Java applet is that the visitor is required to have the java plug-in downloaded on their computer. This is not a major big deal since most people already have it installed. It also requires JVM,
