The war started because the eleven states in the south of America declared to withdraw from Union and expelled the federal troops, set up a government by Jefferson Davis, after the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln in 1861. So Lincoln ordered to attack to the “rebel” states. During the Civil War, there happened many battles; some of them are standing for the victory of Union like the Battle of Brandy Station and the Battle of Cheri. However, I believe that the Battle of Gettysburg as a turning point of the Civil War played a vital part in the final victory of Union.
The person who commanded Battle of Gettysburg was General, he played a significant role on the road to the victory of the battle of Gettysburg. The victory of the Battle of Gettysburg made the Confederate lost the strategic initiative of the all war and never marched to north again. At the meantime, the Union changed its position to attack. The Victory of the Battle of the Gettysburg firmed people’s confidence that the Union would win the Civil War. The victory of the Battle of the Gettysburg also encouraged people to straggle for the achievement of the Civil War. Because of these, Abraham Lincoln said, “It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion that we here highly resolve that these dead should not have died in vain that this nation, under God, should have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, should not perish from the earth.”
