In 1898 American troops defeated the Spanish, who had control over the Philippines using "reeking hands" (Doc B). The Philippines landed in the hands of the United States, who would find themselves in a controversial debate regarding the annexation of the Philippines. Throughout this time, both anti-imperialists like Mark Twain and pro-imperialists like former President McKinley, shared their opinions loudly, finally leading to the question. Should the United States have made the decision to control the Filipinos? Ultimately, the controversial American decision served as a benefit to both America and the Philippines because tyranny from Spain created a sense of incapability in the Philippines, it helped fulfill the idea of the Manifest Destiny, and it stopped expansion of other powerful countries empires.
