The American colonization efforts started when Christopher Columbus accidently encountered the Indies on his expedition to Asia. This voyage sparked the Age of Exploration. The land discovered by Columbus sparked great interests from the European powers. Countries such as France and Spain were interested in either gaining commercial profit, or interested in conquest.

The land discovered by Columbus sparked great interests from the European powers. Countries such as France and Spain were interested in either gaining commercial profit, or interested in conquest.Through each country's comparisons and contrasts between one another, they left a lasting left a lasting impact on North American society and made the country what it is today. Through their motivations of colonization, their treatment of the native american peoples, and their eventual community development, it is evident that France and Spain possess many similarities and differences in these areas.
As the French and the Spanish colonized America they came in contact with the natives. Each European power had a similar and yet different approach to their treatment of the indigenous peoples. “The French did not have the manpower to bully, dispossess ,or enslave native people but instead attempted to build an empire through alliances with independent Indian nations, which included commercial relations with Indian hunters” (64). After settling in Quebec, Samuel De Champlain forged an alliance with the Huron indians and helped them fight against the Five Nation Iroquois Confederacy. It was also said that, “Champlain sent traders to live in native communities, where they learned local languages and customs, and directed the flow of furs to Quebec” (62).
