Chapter 11 Identifications
“Revolution of 1800” – After winning the presidential election of 1800, Jefferson described his victory as the “Revolution of 1800”. He believed the republican win over the federalists was as real as a revolution. Unlike the federalists who aimed for a big central government, the republicans goal was give more power to the states.
Aaron Burr – Aaron Burr originally was running as Thomas Jefferson’s vice president but then decided to run for president against Jefferson in the election of 1800. He was the third vice president of the United States while serving in Thomas Jefferson’s first term and killed Alexander Hamilton. He was also a continental army officer in the revolutionary war and later became a lawyer and politician.
“Midnight Judges” – “Midnight Judges” was the nickname given to judges appointed by John Adams the night before he left office in 1800. He intended for them to go to the federal courts so they could have long term federal influence on the country. Adams appointed them after he realized the federalists were losing power.
Marbury v. Madison – Marbury v. Madison was a Supreme Court case ruled by John Marshall in the early 1800’s. William Marbury had sued for not receiving his commission after being promised a job by former president John Adams but denied by President Thomas Jefferson. The case established the judicial review and Marshall declared that the court could not rule on the case and ruled that the judiciary act of 1789 was unconstitional.
Judicial Review – The Judicial Review was established after the Marbury v. Madison case in the early 1800’s. The Judicial Review gave the Supreme Court the power to determine constitutionality and it helped establish the Judiciary branch.
