I chose to write about Claude Monet’s, “Fisherman’s Cottage on the Cliffs at Varengeville”. This oil canvas was painted originally back in 1882. What attracted me was the colors. Though these are not exactly vibrant colors, there is something about it that caught my attention. The first thing I noticed was my favorite color, blue. I love water, and everything about it. The overall painting made me feel depressed actually. This paining shows me a view of something that I am missing out on. I have never viewed something as beautiful as this scenery, nor have I had the luxury to stay in a simple, yet comfortable and peaceful cottage next to the wide open ocean. The painting makes me realize that life can be a better experience if I would take time to value nature itself.
After researching about Monet’s life and his paintings, I found it interesting that he would mainly paint nature and scenery. Also, Monet would paint scenery, and then repaint the same scenery over a few times. Monet wanted to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. Monet did have a hard life in the beginning; he tried to make a profit off of paintings that no one wanted to buy. The research does add to my understanding of the fisherman’s cottage; this helps me understand why he painting this scenery. There’s more to this painting than the obvious- the season, the time, the temperature, etc. All this research and information confirms my initials thoughts about Monet and his works.
