Communication between law enforcement and the press have much legality. What is being communicated from law enforcement is carefully censored because it may jeopardize the case. There are also respect factors. Let’s say for example there were people who were involved in a crime. The individuals involved maybe do not want the attention, and would rather not have their names out in the public. Depending on what the crime is, they probably have been through so much, and the last thing on their mind is to have people asking what happened.
Non-verbal communication between law enforcement and the press go back many years. Before the advancement of Internet and television, law enforcement communicated in a non-verbal manner. Whether it was through printed newspapers, or whether it was through the telegram, information was somehow passed along from one channel to another. This type of communication was very effective back when technology was not as advanced.
These two types of communication, verbal and non-verbal, affects communication in a way that what is being interpreted by law enforcement, can be mis-interpreted by the press and the general public. It is critical that what is being relayed to the press from law enforcement, must be censored, in order to prevent misconception. The press has strong influence, and can sway the general public towards one direction, depending on what is perceived by what is seen or heard. Communication in these two forms is very effective, and can definitely get a point across. If a certain case or issue needs to be brought to light, law enforcement and media can without a doubt make that attention happen. All it takes is a couple calls or emails between the press and law enforcement, and the general public will be all over it, creating their own views of the situation.
