The two workplaces that will be reflected are my experiences at College Pro and KPMG. College Pro is window cleaning franchise that hires university students and helps them run their own franchise business for a summer. KPMG on the other hand is an accounting firm which provides services including audit, tax and consulting to its business clients.
I found the two workplace environments to be significantly different. First difference was in terms of the time people in my group, including myself used to arrive. At College Pro, as it was our own business, we were the ones who would decide what time to start the work, when to end it, how long of lunch break to take, and even the days that work should be done. KPMG is significantly different in this regard. Everybody needs to be at office at around 8:30 am sharp every morning. You only get one hour of lunch throughout the day, however you can choose when that break would be. Although typical work hours are from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, most of my days were spend sitting late nights till around 11 pm. In case of an absence, I had to immediately notify my manager and would then approve the leave.
Other difference was in terms of the clothes people wore. At College Pro, since the job was window cleaning, casual clothes and boots were worn by all employees. Moreover, at times there was also a need to wear protective clothing. At KPMG on the other hand, every employee is required to wear conventional business clothes and look a certain way, especially when meeting with a client.
Some similarities I found between the two experiences were that at both places, colleagues and clients were referred to by first name. You could listen to music at work. And lastly, a lot of planning went into every day’s work.
