Terrorism

Terrorism, considered the act of a coward, has haunted the people of the United States as well as individuals all over the world for many years. These acts of violence have reared its ugly head at sporting events, government buildings, military ships, and other humans. It has taken its toll on American by threatening our peace of mind and bringing us into wars that have been detrimental to our economy. Terrorism usually comes in two forms, which is political and criminal. Political terrorism creates panic and chaos on a large scale and criminal terrorism deals in kidnapping to take ransom. The act of political terrorism is much more dangerous because it is well-planned and well thought out and the people involved are trained and highly funded. For example, hundreds of terrorists are being trained at the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK) and in Punjab, there is no doubt that the terrorist are receiving training and weapons from Pakistan.

Today, terrorism is usually considered acts of groups and not individuals. This is not always the case. Some terrorist work alone and it has been many incidents to prove it. One example of one person performing an act of terrorism is the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas by a Sunni extremist. This act of cowardice resulted in the deaths of thirteen people and forty-three was wounded. It was believed that a gap existed in providing information to the right people. The mechanisms for sharing potential indicators of internal threats with appropriate command channels were limited. Department of Defense leaders have continually examined and revised policies regarding inappropriate behavior since the mid-1990. Since the Fort Hood incident, our leaders have directed changes that improve our information sharing capabilities. The time has passed when bureaucratic concerns by specific entities over prote4cting “their” information can be allowed to prevent relevant threat information and indicators from reaching those who need it like the military commanders. The Department of Defense has started to exercise its role to set the bar higher to establish a new force protection culture, with new standards and concerns and procedures for sharing information, to recognize and defeat evolving external and internal threats.
