The American Revolution did not happen overnight but happened over an extended period of time and had many causes. As a successful Virginia planter; I will exhibit the main reasons I believe that caused a person of the Southern Elite to support or have involvement in the American Revolution. I will also reveal the reasons I believe a common North Carolina backcountry freehold farmer would support the revolutionary cause. I will begin with the Virginia Planter.
As a Virginia planter, I stand for the revolution for the freedom of the American colonies against the English Oppressor. On Sunday's last churd gathering; many people commneted that the British are going to add another tax on all products. This so called Stamp Act imposed stamp duties, on every newspaper, pamphlet almanac, legal document, liquor license, college diploma, pack of playing cards and a pair of dice. Besides all the other new tax acts; such as: The Sugar Act and the Currency Act, are beginning to put a toll on my profits. The money I just made from the 7 year war is no diminishing. The British are now forcing all these strict laws or rules with their Acts. For now; I am going to make a complaint to Chesapeake original colonies; passed on these lands to my family and others; my Grandfather acquired enough capitol to invest heavily in slaves and create a gentry lifestyle that set my family apart from ordinary farmers. By "grentry lifestyle" I mean; always displaying what we believe to be our brith right; racing thoroughbred horses, gambling, educating our children in England, building beautiful brick Mansions, purchasing imported furniture to fill our houses.
