I believe the United States needs a national transportation policy because it help stabalizes certain issues. America spends about $170 billion every year just on transportation alone. The way things are going now, we will probably have to spend much more money to rebuild our infrastructure. Now we are spending to much on things that is not necessary for our economy. The spending that is going towards transportation needs to have a target to help achieve our economic and enviromental goals. It shows in certain areas that the national transportation policy is put on the back burner, but other issues is more important. For example, we have all types of roads and bridges that lead to nowhere. I wonder if our leaders are taking the time to see these investments they thought could generate dividends in the near future. That is why we need to take a new approach toward transportation. Transportation needs to be put on the top priority list of the American economy. The economy treats the subject almost if it is a liability, but we need to treat it like it is a asset. My opinion towards evacuation and disaster relief being addressed by the national policy is broad. For instance, during hurricane katrina and rita almost 60% wanted to or was not able to leave. Certain reasons were there was lack of transportation and their unwillingness to leave homes and property. It was estimated that 200,000 to 300,000 people do not have access to personal transportation. The national transportation policy would benefit us all in the near future if will would focus on it a little more.
