Ferdinand Magellan was an explorer who proved the world was round. He was Portuguese but sailed under the flag of Spain. He never made it back to Spain, but he still made a huge impact in history. Throughout Magellan’s voyage he was pressured to stop and turn back, but he never gave up. At one point his crew members wanted to kill him and take over the ship, but Magellan stood tall and prevailed.
Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal in 1480. Magellan’s parents were Portuguese nobility. After his parent’s death, at the age of ten he became a page for the queen. Magellan studied cartography, astronomy, and celestial navigation at Queen Leonora’s School of Pages in Lisbon. Which would help him in is future. Magellan was a devoted Christen, which might have been his downfall. Magellan died in 1521 in Mactan Philippines before he could make it back to Spain.
Magellan had a plan, he thought he could sail west going around the tip of South America. He was born in Portugal but sailed under the flag of Spain because of a dispute between Magellan and the people in Portugal. Eventually Magellan moved to Spain and asked the king of Spain to sponsor his voyage. The King of Spain agreed to sponsor him. The king gave him five ships. The names of the five were the Trinidad, Conception, Santiago, San Antonio, and the Victoria. Magellan and his crew set sail on September 20th 1519. Throughout the voyage some of the crew members tried killing Magellan. Many people died on this voyage from various things such as, starvation, and sickness. Along the way Magellan gave the Pacific Ocean its name which meant peaceful ocean. He and his crew encountered a storm which destroyed the Santiago.
