Success Story

William Redington Hewlett was born in Ann Arbor in Michigan. Hewlett's father was a professor in the University of Michigan Medical School. In 1916, they had moved to San Francisco where his father, Albion Walter Hewlett had a similar position as Stanford Medical School.

According to (The National Academies Press, n.d) in 1934, Hewlett received a Bachelor's degree from Stanford University. In 1936, Hewlett graduated with a Master of Science in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the degree of Electrical Engineering from Stanford in 1939. In 1941 until 1945 he was the army chief signal officer in the United States Army and after that he was transferred to the New Development Division in Washington D.C, Philippine and Japan. At that time, he was appointed as a lieutenant colonel. At Hewlett Packard Company he became as vice president and director in 1947 until 1957 followed in 1957 to 1964 as executive vice-president and director. In 1964 to 1968 he was a president and director and in 1977 until 1978 he was elected as a president, chief executive committee, chief executive officer and director. He became as a chairman of the Executive Committee and director in 1978 until 1983 followed in a year 1983 to 1987 as a vice-chairman of the Board of Directors and 1987 as Director emeritus. He had contributed in lots of services during his lifetime. He died on 21st January 2001.

David Packard was a Co founder with William Redington Hewlett in Hewlett Packard Company. He was born in Pueblo in Colorado. His father worked as a lawyer and his mother was a school teacher. He had completed his study at Centennial High School. At the beginning of his school, he showed an interest in engineering, science, sports and leadership (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, 2008). In 1934, he graduated from Stanford University for his Bachelor of Arts (B. A). He met with Lucile Salter and Bill Hewlett while he was studying at Stanford University. Packard has been hired at General Electric in Schenectady, New York from 1936 to 1938. In 1939, he returned to Stanford from New York, where he earned a master's degree in Electrical Engineering. Packard and Hewlett became a partner from 1939 until 1947. After that he became a president in 1964 to 1964 and held the position until 1969 when he was elected as Chief Executive Officer and chairman of the board. He joined the United States deputy Secretary of Defense in Washington from January 1969 until December 1971. After that he was elected as Chairman of the Board in Hewlett Packard Company in 1972 until 1993 and he became a Chairman Emeritus in 1993 to 1996. He has contributed lots of services and received a bulk of the awards. He died on 26 March 1996 (Hewlett-Packard Development Company, 2004).
