Remington Arms Company Incorporated was established by Eliphalet Remington in small town Ilion, New York in 1816. Currently, Remington Arms Company, Incorporated is the oldest company in the United States that continues to manufacture its original products. Remington, Inc makes both firearms and ammunition in the United States. Not only is it one of the largest producers of shotguns and rifles, it has also developed more cartridges than any other gun maker in the world. (McLaughlin, 2001)
Eliphalet Remington had the ambition to pursue gun making because he believed he could produce a more quality product than what was available at the time. Remington's father was a blacksmith and initially wanted to expand his endeavors to producing rifle barrels. At this time, it was common for people to make their own barrels to save money. In 1816, metal was one of the most precious items available. Eliphalet being the Yankee boy that he was collected every bit metal that he could. (McLaughlin, 2001) He had eventually collected enough scraps in order to make his own gun barrel and eventually developed his own rifle. This process was lengthy, taking him almost numerous weeks to perfect his rifle. Remington was unable to cut his rifle on his own, so he had to travel to a local blacksmith who helped him create what would be the beginning of Remington Rifles. (Remington Arms Company, 2000) Remington started to design and constructing a flintlock rifle for his personal use. His design got noticed when Remington entered a shooting match. Although he did not finish first, his well made design and construction techniques got attention and people took notice. Soon after, Remington and his father opened up a shop where they would sell shotguns, rifles, axe picks and many other items. (McLaughlin, 2001)Many people started placing orders from Remington and soon his competitors were asking him to make guns for them. He had so many orders that he was officially in the gun making profession. Due to so many outside shipments to surrounding counties, Remington needed a bigger operating are and by 1828 moved its operations to a large farm located in IIion, New York. (McLaughlin, 2001) This plant is still currently used by Remington. Later that year, Eliphalets father had passed, putting much of the pressure on his shoulders. Remington took advantage of the new location by using the Erie Canal to better ship items to outside.
The business end of Remington had began to expand with the increase in the Remington family. Eliphalets other brother, Samuel, had joined in as the general agent making many of the business transactions. E.Remington and Sons was created in 1856 and business was about to take off due to the Civil War. (McLaughlin, 2001). In 1858, the Remington Revolver was created.
