Assignment One

Question 2

By Social Reality, we mean that people will automatically make sense of the objective world when they are connecting with it. It means that at first, people may find something that is meaningless or nothing to them. After that, people may find that it is sensible and make sense of everything. The more important is that individuals in a group may try to make sense of the objective things which are happening in the group as part of the group’s culture.

In this case, at the beginning, Fred think that he does not need to join a group. However, he joined the orientation camp after he became a freshman. Fred also hate speaking up and think that it is stupid. On the other hand, he yelled loudly in the orientation camp. Moreover, Fred likes dressing outstanding but he put on “department tee-shirt”. Fred acts like that which made him looked like the others. By the point of sociology, at first, Fred thought that many things that will be meaningless or nothing to him. After getting in touch with the objective world, Fred are more likely to start making sense of those things which are about the social reality. Without the process of social reality, we may not think that the objective world will be meaningful to us.

Socialization is a process which shapes the personality of individuals so that people act like the same with others and accept social norm. However, people who are acting not the same with the social norm are performing a deviant behavior.

By Fred’s situation, he joined the orientation camp and act the same with other participants because he may not want to perform a deviant behavior that act different with others.

On the other hand, there are some freshmen who did not join any orientation camp at all. We can define that kind of people as performing a deviant behavior. They may think that the orientation camp is not important for them. The reasons why some freshmen may act different are because of a certain belief, religious, political or social. Those freshmen may have different reason or perspectives that make them decide not to join the orientation camp. They are more likely to act different with other freshmen or students.
