Hrothgar's advice to Beowulf is if he ever becomes king, he must never let his pride and fame become a top priority. Being a good king for your people is much more important than being greedy and caring about all the riches. Hrothgar reminds Beowulf that he is not invincible, and time will one day take his life. When Beowulf became king, his actions showed the readers his lack of heeding Hrothgar's advice, which could have ultimately saved his life and his kingdom. One huge aspect in the advice Hrothgar gives to Beowulf is to not let fame and fortune get to his head. Beowulf likes to be known for slaying monsters and saving people, since it's naturally what he's good at. What Beowulf tends to forget is that he isn't going to be able to kill monsters for the rest of his life, eventually whenrmy to help that he actually went and attempted to kill the dragon. In the end, the dragon killed Beowulf, right as Beowulf killed him (with some help). Exactly what Hrothgar knew would happen, happened. Beowulf let his love for fame get to him to the point where he no longer thought rationally about what could be the end of him. Hrothgar told Beowulf that he needed to respect danger, and by running right into the path of the dragon as a one man army, evidently showed how much of an impact Hrothgars speech had on him. No rational thinking was made and no second guessing of his choices occurred. Beowulf's self esteem was the cause of his death, he had so much of it he almost forgot he could even actually die. For Beowulf, the riches he could have received from that dragon's lair were so important to him that's all he thought about. Hrothgar warned him that the riches didn't matter, he was better without them. Hrothgarsaid this because he knew Beowulf would soon be unable to deny the riches and be able live without them.
