A man went to Starbucks and got a double shot of coffee. He than drank this and got into his car and hit 2 college students and fled the scene of the crime. The police than caught up to him and he resisted arrested and had to have a Taser to get him in cuffs.
He was hospitalized for months and many tests were run on him. He was found to have a rare Bipolar disorder and his case is that coffee triggers his attacks. He than was on a Bench trial for the incident and used this as a reason for his crime.
After the bench trial took place, he was tried on the reason of insanity. He receives outpatient treatment under the courts supervision. He is no longer aloud to drink coffee. Following cases have tried to use the coffee or caffeine as their motive to their crimes.
Caffeine intoxication should be the basis for insanity plea. They most prove that they weren’t in their right state of mind and couldn’t control it. Their has to be tests that prove this and proof without a reasonable doubt that caffeine triggers this illness.
A man in FL killed his father and brother and said it was the result of to much caffeine. He said also that he was defending himself from his father. He was convicted of the crime and these defenses are rare for juries to ever believe them.
