Federal Prison Comparison
This is a comparison paper, within this paper I will research and describe the various prisons in which the following individuals were held Martha Stewart, Ivan Boesky, Michael Millken, Manuel Noriega, Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols, Al Capone, and John Gotti. Each one of the mention people were convicted of a federal a crime and had served time in a federal prison. I will also compare and contrast the individuals based on similarities that may exist and the difference between them.
Martha Stewart, Ivan Boesky, and Michael Millken were all sent to a low security prison, or minimum security prison, these newer, smaller prisons have minimal perimeter security and fewer internal controls. The inmate-to-guard ratio is even higher, and inmates may live in rooms or dorms with more privacy and more amenities (Foster, 2006). These three individuals were sent to prison camps to serve out their sentences. Martha was sent to Alderson Federal Prison Camp for women, Ivan was assigned to California’s Lompoc Federal Prison Camp, and Millken was sent to serve out his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Pleasanton California. These three prisons are that of the same. The three prisons does not have walls nor do they have cells with bars, but instead they have dormitories (the buildings themselves resembling a college campus building) it which they have the options of closing and locking his or her own cell doors. Inside each dorm the inmates would have roommates that range from two to three other inmates. The grounds of the prisons do not have walls with guard towers, but instead they have either fence that run side by side each other and end at a gate entrance. The prisons also have adjacent facilities that house inmates that are out of control or who have broken the rules of the prison. The three prisons also made it known of the goals of being on the grounds of prison camps, which was to become reformed through the programs and maintain every schedule to adequately complete the jobs that are given. In Martha’s case, the Alderson Federal Prison Camp for women or the federal Industrial Institution for Women later became the Federal Reformatory for Women, The prison employs 195 full-time staff members, and has a capacity of 677 inmates (Trail, 2010) and is the only reason Martha was sent there to reform and rehabilitate on her actions for lying to the investigators. Ivan’s California’s Lompoc Federal Prison Camp stay was also a rare form of boot camp that strives to reform the inmates by the use of work ethics as a unit. They even have a drill team to assist with keeping the inmates inline. This prison had inmates move fast and give them only a ten minute walking time to get to where they were going and mostly moved the inmates in pairs or escorted.
