A question that audiences frequently ask before they watch a movie is "what type of film genre is this?". Some may even go to the extent and ask "how do we know which film falls into which genre". Every film that we watch today has a genre, be it movies that was made in Hollywood or Asia. When we talk about film genre, we talk about a group or a set of movies that has a similar theme and elements falling into a single category. In other words, genres are ways of classifying movies that are shared by viewers, filmmakers and not to mention critics. These classifications include category such as adventure, drama, romance, comedy, musical and so on. A film genre never fails to include any of the following: themes, plot, props, motifs, subject matter, styles and many more. However, the question still remains, how do we identify what genre does a film belongs to? Do we categories a movie an action movie just because it has car chasing and explosion? Do we classify a movie with love story as a romance movie? Many people would answer yes to those questions. But here is the fact; there are more than one ways to analyze a film genre. Classifying a film genre is not as simple as one might think. For instance, although a movie that features a love story typically falls into a romance movie, there are several approach that should be considered before categorizing it as a romance movie. Each of the approach provides audiences different ways of analyzing a film genre.
