SOURCE DESCRIPTION:  All data were collected by G. Mark Holmes, a former Michigan State University undergraduate, for a term project.  Salary data were obtained from the New York Times, April 11, 1993.  The baseball statistics are from The Baseball Encyclopedia, 9th edition, and the city population figures are from the Statistical Abstract of the United States.

ALLSTAR:        Percent of Years as an All-Star

ATBATS:                Career At Bats

ATBATSYR:        At Bats per Year

BAVG:                Career Batting Average  

BB:                Career Walks  

BLACK:                Person Identifies Self as Being “Black”:  (0 = No, 1 = Yes)

BLACKPOP:        Total Black Population in City

CATCHER:        Player’s Position is at Catcher:  (0 = No, 1 = Yes)

DOUBLES:        Career Doubles  

FLDPERC:        Career Fielding Percentage

FRSTBASE:        Player’s Position is at First Base:  (0 = No, 1 = Yes)

GAMES:                Career Games Played

GAMESYR:        Games per Year in League

HISPAN:                Person Identifies Self as Being “Hispanic”:  (0 = No, 1 = Yes) 

HISPPOP:                Total Hispanic Population in City

HITS:                Career Hits

HRUNS:                Career Home Runs

HRUNSYR:        Home Runs per Year

NL:                Person plays for the National League:  (0 = No, 1 = Yes) 

OUTFIELD:        Player’s Position is in the Outfield:  (0 = No, 1 = Yes) 

PCINC:                City Per Capita Income (U.S. Dollars)

PERCBLCK:        Percent of City Population that is Black
