Another way Shylock is presented is that shylock is a very Selfish and self-centred character. He only thinks about himself rather than the people around him. In the play Shylock expresses how Jews are different to Christians as when Bassanio invites him to dinner, Shylock says "I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, walk with you, and so following, but I will not eat with you, drink with you, nor pray with you". Some say Shylock is being hateful as it shows how Shylock is displaying racism towards the Christians. In Act 2 scene 8 Solanio voiced Shylock and said "O my ducats! O my daughter! O my Christian ducats" This shows that everyone saw how shylock had cared more about his precious ducats than his own daughter and it gives us a vivid image of how shylock was reacting to the news about his daughters elopement. Straight after when Shylock finds out about the news that Antonio's ship had been wrecked, Shylock was extremely pleased and thanks Tubal and is constantly stuttering "Is it true? Is it true?" which shows how much he wanted Antonio's flesh and how he didn't care about Antonio's wellbeing at all.
