Company Leadership Analysis
An example of an excellent leader in new media is Alexis Ohanian, an Internet entrepreneur, startup founder, and investor. He has been named in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, as well as Inc. Magazine’s 30 Under 30 list.
He is most well known for the website Reddit, now a top 100 website, that he co-founded with Steve Huffman. He now works with Reddit as a member of its Board of Directors, but has moved on to launch a variety of projects, including Breadpig, Hipmunk, and Das Kapital Capital.
He founded his social enterprise Breadpig in 2007 to produce “geeky wares” and novelty products, as well as publishing popular web comics, to sell and donate profits to charitable organizations and worthy causes, which has added up to $200,000 so far.
Hipmunk is a travel search website he helped launch, running the marketing, public relations, and community relations aspects. He now works with Hipmunk as an advisor and evangelist.
Das Kapital Capital is his company that focuses on startup investing, advising, and consulting that was launched in 2010. He invests and advises over 60 tech start ups, is the co-founder of IHAS, a non-profit organization, and is currently writing a book about “how the 21st century will be made, not managed” discussing why aspiring entrepreneurs to see the future of the internet for fun, profit, and to better the world.
Ohanian is also a social activist, as seen through his vision in Breadpig and IHAS, but also in his actions. He was named as the top most influential activist of 2012 in The Daily Dot online newspaper. In 2010 and 2011, he spoke out against Congress’s Stop Online Piracy Act and the Senate’s Protect IP Act at the NY Tech Meetup rally.
