Pinterest is a virtual pinboard that allows users to share pictures of anything that might interest
them. Pins refer to a picture that a user posts on Pinterest. Once a user signs in, he or she can
browse through pins and add comments to them. He or she can also share these images by repinning
them to their own board. Pins can also be shared on Twitter and Facebook. It is
interactive and fun to browse through pins because it gives users an opportunity to see and
learn new things that they might otherwise not have. Users can browse through topics and pick
any that might interest them. These topics include, but are not limited to, recipes, wedding,
workout, books, movies, video games.
A recent report by Experian revealed that Pinterest is now the third largest social media site
based on the number of site visits in March 2012.
Problems Identified:
The following are a few suggestions for improvements for Pinterest:
ıPrivate boards – Each individual can have several boards that they can post pins on. However,
they are all public – this means that anyone can see the boards that users pin on. Pinterest does
not have the feature to have boards' private, thus limiting the sharing to only individuals that
the user permits. It's the single main features that would improve the site's utility and user
experience.
ıMessage Users – The only method that is currently available to communicate with other
users on Pinterest is to either comment on their pins or @mention them in a comment. There is
no privacy in this since other users can read these comments. Pinterest should have a
messaging feature that allows users to get in touch with each other in a private manner if they
prefer. For example, if I am following a friend and would like to tell him or her something
private, I cannot do so with the current Pinterest system. However, if Pinterest implements the
