Think Different Exercise
The Apple "Think Different" was part of Apple advertising campaign debuted on September 28, 1997. The commercial called “Crazy Ones” only lasted one minute and was in black and white. The footage in the background displayed 17 iconic personalities who had a major impact on the world. The commercial ended with a young girl with her eyes closed as if she was making a wish. In this exercise, we discussed what each contributed to the world, their characteristics and the value of imagination. These 17 individuals of the 20th century were not afraid to take a chance.
The Individuals
Albert Einstein: as we know was a scientific genius whose vision and theory of relativity helped in a new age. Thomas Edison: was an inventor whose inventions include the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the electric light bulb. Frank Lloyd Wright: the inventor of “organic architecture”, and structures that are in accord with humanity and its environment. Bob Dylan: the socially conscious folk singer whose songs were part of the civil rights era. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: was the leading civil rights campaigner during the 1950’s and 1960’s that had a dream that is still in progress today. John Lennon: was a human rights activist who used music to spread the work about peace. Gandhi believed in nonviolent civil disobedience. Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom for future generations. Pablo Picasso: inspired Cubism, and invented most of the art movement in the twentieth century. Lennon, along with Paul McCartney, wrote groundbreaking music of the past century. Richard Branson: founder of Virgin Group, which includes 400 or more companies. Maria Callas: a renowned opera singer of the 20th century. Ted Turner: founder of CNN (cable news network) the first 24-hour cable news channel. Buckminster Fuller: an American neo-futuristic architect, systems theorist, author, designer, inventor and publisher of more than 30 books. Alfred Hitchcock: pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller movies. Martha Graham: her influence on dance has the same effect as viewing Picasso and modern visual arts. Jim Henson: the creator of the famous Muppets.
Contribution to the World
The individuals in the commercial contributed a lot to the world from leadership to showmanship. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and Gandhi believed in equality for all. They were both passionate for their belief and they both were very creative with their thinking when constructing their speeches. Jim Henson and John Lennon both had a creative mind in music. They both performed songs that had meaning behind the music. Jim focused on children, while John focused on an older crowd. They both were creative in their music, bringing it to life and drawing their audience in to see and feel what they are singing about. John and Jim were on a different level of creativity. The commercial refers to them as the "Crazy Ones" because they pushed the human race forward ("Here's To the Crazy Ones, Think Different - Apple", 2013) Today people remember them as heroes.
