M3 Written Assignment - Applications of Humor

Section 1

The first comic i choose is a single panel political cartoon. The picture is of a short, fat little man making “duck lips” standing at a podium. The crowd are elephants and the backdrop is a banner with “GOP” written across it. The man at the podium has a torch in his hand and is obliviously setting fire to the whole room, and the audience is cowering in fear. The man at the podium is saying “You need to profile dangerous people before letting them in” and the elephants in the crowd says to another “yeah you live and you learn”. The cartoon is a satirical look at Donald trump's run for presidency, his “policies” and the way the party he runs under, the republicans is collapsing, and how other party members are reacting to the man they gave the nomination to.

Although many people say not to talk politics at work an older man i work with enjoys talking to me about it and neither of us get offended or out of line while discussing it with each other, although we have different views. He is willing to believe anything he sees on T.V. believing news sources that are clearly biased in favor of Trump and makes his choices off of that information. I am of the opinion that the news is, in fact biased and both sides in this political race have their faults and will not vote for either. This man can not understand why i think both sides are wrong and how i can not want to vote for Trump with all the ways he's going to “change” the political scene since he himself is not a politician.

By sharing this comic with that man i can show him that many people share my views of how Trump is a politician. Although i wouldn't try and change his mind on who to vote for i would hope to use this funny little comic to help him see my views on why neither of the two major parties are worth voting for. This would help to reduce the tension or confusion he feels towards how a younger generation looks at the political world and their views of the candidates.

The second comic i looked at is a “Pearls before swine” strip. In this three panel strip Pig is at the bar with goat and a woman. The bar is small and there is just a beer and bowl of popcorn in front of them. Pig introduces his friend to goat by saying “Hey goat, this is my pal linda. Shes never been promoted and her employer doesn't appreciate her attempts to break the glass ceiling” goat replies with “they're sexist?” to which the woman replies “i work in a greenhouse” and pig then says “she just can't stop throwing rocks” and she says “it’s fun to break those little panes” with a rock in her hand and crazed look on her face and goat says with a hand covering his face “i get it. Stop.”

This comic is really quite funny to me and i
