Communication Process Model

Model 1:

Who was the sender? I am.

Who was the receiver? My boss.

What was the message? There were several issues at work that weren’t being handled and                   issues that need to be resolved.

What channel was used to send the message? Face to face conversation that took place in a quiet office free from noise or distractions.

What was the misunderstanding that occurred? While trying to communicate the issues, my boss was focused on my tone of voice and the emotions and frustrations with which I was delivering the message. The issues weren’t dealt with because she was so focused on me and not the problems I was trying to discuss with her.

How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? My mistake was going into the meeting emotionally compromised. I should have approached the situation at another time when I had time to compose myself and gather all the information into a professional list instead of rambling off issues and coming across unprepared.

Model 2:

Who was the sender? My team lead.

Who was the receiver? I was.

What was the message? One of our team members had suddenly quit. My team lead was trying to move around our existing shifts to fill the gap. She asked me to adjust my shift by moving it up an hour. I agreed and then the conversation ended quickly afterwards.

What channel was used to send the message? The conversation took place over my cell phone while I was in a noisy restaurant.

What was the misunderstanding that occurred? What I didn’t hear in the conversation is that I would be working alone for two and a half hours, on a Saturday and a holiday weekend. I wasn’t able to pick up all the details because I was distracted by what was happening around me and not paying attention to the person on the phone.

How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? When I saw that the call was from my team lead I should have excused myself from the table and moved to a quieter location so I could hear and focus on conversation that was happening.
