“How Personal Can Ethics Get”

Introduction
Ethics often end and begin with the individual however it is a corporate concept in its entirety. An individual’s personal ethics in most cases has a direct impact on the company as a whole. It is true that corporations must take ethics seriously and make creating a culture of integrity a priority; however, it is also true that each individual must make decisions that properly reflect the ethical code that is being pressed upon them.
Personal differences and Organizational Ethics
In order for ethics to be a priority personal differences and organizational ethics have to coincide with one another. The culture has to become part of the character of the individual. When there is a disparity between individual preferences and organizational ethics conflict inevitably arises. This is seen in Valerie’s case. She has to make an ethical decision, one that will affect her personal preferences as well as the organization as a whole. When personal differences are elevated above organizational ethics then decisions are made that can ultimately blur the ethical line. Ethics must be practiced regardless of personal of preference.
Policies & Procedures and Their Impact on Ethics
Often times policies and procedures are what guide a company. They are the foundation on which the company is built. That foundation clearly spells out what is right and wrong to employees and gives them an idea of the culture to be expected to live within the corporation. This is normally a good thing for the organization as it encourages order within the workforce, and removes any uncertainty about how employees ought to conduct themselves within the work place. Bottom line in my view when clearly outlined, proper policies and procedures influences high ethical standards within the corporation.
