Introduction

This essay studies the engagement of Mondragon Corporacion Cooperativa (MCC) with the three interrelated topics of business ethics (BE), corporate social responsibility (CSR), and sustainability. Each of the three areas is given equal weighting and each has its own section including a brief summation. An overarching conclusion follows as the final section.

MCC is a worker-owned cooperative and the extent to which this defines its corporate ethos and practices could not be overstated. There are numerous studies of MCC in academia but few take a BE standpoint and theoretical application is limited. In this paper, theories such as Kantian, Stakeholder, and Triple Bottom are included within BE, CSR, and sustainability respectively. As a well-known exponent of ethics and social responsibility, MCC has been held as a model organisation. Some key papers reviewed, however, such as Errasti’s study into internationalisation and Kasmir’s comprehensive critique, challenge this notion. Certainly, an underlying thread throughout this paper is the contradictory nature between MCC’s domestic and foreign BE practices.
