Case Study: Interviewing Candidates (Zipcar)
Zipcar was started in 1999 in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Antje Danielson and Robin Chase, who were interested in decreasing the number of cars on the road and improve the environment (Tice, 2012). What started as a small company has become very popular in the last 16 years. The premise of the company was to allow people to have the use of a car without the obligations of ownership (ZipCar: Interviewing Candidates, n.d.). Working for Zipcar can be a great opportunity for an individual who is customer service oriented and is interested in working for a company that is socially responsible.
There are three behavioral and three situational questions that I would ask if I was a Zipcar interviewer to see if the individual would be a good match with the company. The behavioral questions would be:
1. ‘Describe a time when you went above and beyond to help resolve a client’s issue’.
2. ‘Tell me about a time when you had a disagreement with a colleague and how did you handle it’.
3. Describe a situation when
The situational questions would include:
1. ‘What would you do if an angry member came into your office and started yelling at you and how would you diffuse the situation’?
2. ‘What would you do if power was lost in the office and you weren’t able to see the car reservations’?
3. ‘What would you do if one of the members was in a car accident and was seriously injured’?
Asking these questions would determine how the applicant reacted to different scenarios and different behaviors of others and would be one way to determine how the individual would fit in with Zipcar.
