I think CSR can bring benefits to the companies. If CSR is unable to bring benefits, there will be no companies willing to contribute to the society. But we do see that there are a lot of examples.
CSR can bring intangible benefits. Practising CSR can improve the companies’ image, it also brings goodwill. The brand will then be spread by word of mouth. That is the best promotion method ever. According to a survey done by a US organization, when choosing their graduation job, the newly graduates tend to choose firms that practice CSR. Undoubtedly human capital is also a valuable asset.
Besides bringing intangible benefits, CSR can also bring tangible benefits. When the brand name is widely known, sales revenue may rise up. Having a team of young and energetic employees, the company may have higher efficiency in its daily operation and the cost of operation may be reduced to a certain extent.
Some people say CSR is costly. It is true. However, the company leaders should be more far sighted as the long term benefits that can get are much more than the short term cost.
While some people claim that practising CSR is very costly, CSR can indeed create competitive edges and other positive impacts to the company. For example, if a company is well-known for its welfare projects in poor communities, it will be praised by lots of members of the society. Thus, its brand name can become widely known and generate proftis for the company. In this sense, practising CSR is another way of advertisement for the company.
