Barclays is very fervent towards corporate responsibility and takes great pride in all of its citizenship endeavors. Citizenship is one of the four main execution priorities which continue to be a major focus. It plays a crucial part in the genetics of Barclays. Citizenship is accounted for in the annual report and serves as the foundation of sound business principles and practice. The corporation’s involvement goes far beyond providing financial solutions to customers and clients. It focuses on contributing to sustainable economic growth and job creation, as well as supporting communities. By devoting resources, expertise, and time, Barclays is able to implement such philanthropy work into its Citizenship Agenda. From the business aspect, Barclays has forged partnerships in numerous countries to support various efforts such as carbon reduction initiatives to increasing the availability of sports equipment in underdeveloped neighborhoods. Continuing with this great emphasis on the environment, the company has even created Barclays Cycle Hire as a public bicycle sharing scheme. But one of the most important partnerships to date is that of Project Merlin. Project Merlin is an initiative that started on February 9, 2011 by the former chief executive John Varley and the UK Chancellor to support efforts toward the economic recovery of the UK. Barclays, alongside HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Lloyds Banking Group, has committed to lending out more money to smaller businesses, minimizing banker’s bonuses, as well as improving transparency. The bank deal hopes to establish a stable environment for the financial sector to operate in. From the community aspect, employees engage in many different programs that cater to volunteering with schoolchildren, teaching underprivileged kids, serving meals at soup kitchens, park cleanups, and many more. Barclays also sponsors the famous Premier League for English association football clubs.
