  1. Executive summary

With more and more people immigrating to Canada, several issues arise with cultural conflicts. If it were only one culture coming into Canada it would be easy to get around with, however the fact is there are many cultures from all over the world immigrating to Canada daily. Culture differences causes lots of problems and issues such as: stereotyping assumption, sexism, racism, communication gaps, and cognitive differences. These differences affect a lot of workplaces, not only cities to cities but also country to country. These differences are the main causes for billions of income losses.

  1. Introduction:

In this essay I will focus on the differences on: American v.s. Japanese and Canadian v.s. Taiwanese cultures. These cultures are significantly different when it comes to communication. The Japanese/Taiwanese style of communication is to be indirect, while Americans/Canadians are more direct. This becomes a huge issue when communicating with one another, causing major misunderstandings. In the work place, Taiwanese and Canadian people are very different. In Taiwanese culture, the Confucius’s thought affects people’s way of thinking.  For example, females should stay home and take care of her husband and children, because the male is higher than female. The younger people should respect the elder people all the time. Senior people have more wisdom than younger people, so we should follow the way that senior people told us. In Canadian culture, every single people are special and have equal chance. Everyone respect each other, people don’t care about the age but the ability people have in work places. That’s the big different between Canada and Taiwan. The topics I would like to talk about late are:  A. never say no to our guest, B. The level or position in the company, C. Should we eat while we have meeting, D. Soup or Chicken noodle soup, E. Should I give the gifts or not, and F. Guanxi is very important in Taiwan. Those topics are main point that why Taiwanese and Canadian are thought so different, and why we should know each other more about the culture. Then, the company or hotel will have good work environment.
