Week 1 Writing Assignment

In order to understand how to repair the American Health Care system through Christian principles, we first must discus what is wrong with the healthcare system in America. There are many reasons why the healthcare system in America is broken. First, in my opinion Americans pay too much for insurance for not enough coverage. “If the health-care system were to break off from the United States and become its own economy, it would be the fifth-largest in the world” (Kliff, 2014.) Next, doctors are getting paid for quantity not quality, meaning doctors get paid per procedure. These are just a couple of problems that I will touch on.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God Romans 12:2 (King James. ) The technological advances of the past century tended to change the focus of medicine from a caring, service oriented model to a technological, cure-oriented model (Puchalski, 2001, p. 1.) The problem I see here is that a lot of doctors do not spend enough time with their patients. They tend to look at the notes that were taken from the nurse, look at lab work or test results, and then prescribe medication based on what they “think” is wrong. Compassion is something that should go hand in hand with healthcare. As a healthcare worker, we should not only take care of the patient’s physical needs, we should try to take care of the mental, emotional, and spiritual needs as well. Patients that struggle with poor health also struggle mentally and emotionally that is directly related to their health. I believe that some patients need their physician, as well as other healthcare workers, to sit with them and support them in their struggle.
