The dictionary defines housewife as "a woman whose main occupation is caring for her family and running the household." Across the developed world, women who stay home are increasingly seen as old-fashioned and an economic burden to society. If their husbands are rich, they are frequently berated for being lazy. Money is just procurement of things that you need. If there is an economic need in the family – sure, she must have a job to support the family — but it must not be set up as something better to do.
Today if a woman chooses to stay home it is usually because she has the option and wants to care for her children. The fact that despite being well-educated and worked hard enough to make a career, these women have made a conscious and rational decision to give up their jobs to take care of their children. Some people think being a housewife would waste her education, I don’t agree, I think such women should be respected for their choices, their education is not going to waste simply because they are economically inactive. I have three simple questions, what they do, why university and what does it mean to them?
People may look down on housewife because they think it is not a job, or in their opinion, people with high education should do something related to what they have learned, so that their degree or knowledge is not wasted.
Let met start with telling what does a housewife do? Katharine Hepburn is saying ‘Being a housewife and mother is the biggest job in the world” It is a 24 hour job with no salary, pay rise, or any bonus.
I have asked many friends, “What is your mom doing?” They say, “Oh, she is just a housewife.” They do not seem to understand the significance of being accountable for everyone’s needs in the family. My mother is a housewife, she never went about telling me, “I love you” or anything of this kind. Such questions never came because her whole life was dedicated to the family and that is what she wants. I know she lived for me. And I cannot think of a better role model than a loving capable and devoted mother.
In short, a housewife is not only a maid, driver and cook, but also a key foundation of the family, keeping everything in harmony. The functions fulfilled within the family are designed to satisfy the needs of all the parties concerned. A mom always controls the family health, happiness and harmony. The members of the family are thereby dependent on each other. Thus, the way of thinking whoever makes the money in the family plays more important role is wrong.
The second question, why do we go to university? I don’t understand why it is that people assume that because one is educated that they must do something related to their knowledge or be an economically active member of society.
I have an interesting data from Federal Reserve Bank of New York, among the majority of U.S. college grads, They found just 27 percent of college grads had a job that was closely related to their major.
You guys all know Mr.Bean right? He was listed as one of the 50 funniest actors in britsh comedy, but any of you know what degree he graduated with? He had a masters’ degree in electrical engineering.
My point is just because what I did is different than what I have learned, it doesnt mean I wasted my knowledge. depending on where you want to go with your life, people choose different ways to live. The real essence of the university is to create and disseminate better understandings of the world around us. It teaches us more than just knowledge. It also teaches us the way of thinking, and the way of how we evaluate things.
