Differences between Linguistics and Socio-linguistics

When talking about the ways through which individuals can distinguish between linguistics and socio-linguistics is a defined one. Linguistics is the study of language in it’s various forms i.e it’s form, meaning and in context.

Linguistics is the study of the structure of language and how language is used to make complete sentences which make sense to both, the speaker and the listener. There are a number of ways through which the structure of language can be studied.

  1. Phonology
  2. Morphology
  3. Lexicon
  4. Syntax
  5. Pragmatics

Phonology is the system through which the speech sounds are established and how they are distinguished amongst themselves. Morphology is the study of how the words in a language are created and their relationship to other words of the same language is established. Morphology takes into consideration the structure of the words i.e prefixes, suffixes etc. Lexicon is the vocabulary of the person or a language in general. Syntax is the arrangement of words in such a way so that well-structures sentences can be created. Pragmatic refers to the connotation of the words and their connotative meanings in context.

Linguistics include other approaches to studying human language. The main aspects of these studies are usually social, cultural, historical and political factors. Linguistics is a broad study which can be narrowed down to a field which is known as socio-linguistics.

Sociolinguistics largely deals with the relationship between language and the society, as the name states. A ‘society’ is made up of social activities done with or in relation to one another. Social activities can be further classified into two categories, collective and individual activities. Collective activities are those which are performed in a group whereas individual activities i.e using the cell phone is an individual activity. Similar to collective ones, the methods of performing individual activities are shaped up by the fact that the activity is a part of a shared social life.
