Dirt Bikes case
How do you know what information systems are really needed by a business and which are the most important? How should a company’s structure or culture affect the building and use of information systems? Dirt Bikes’s management has asked you to prepare a management analysis of the company to help it assess the firm’s current situation and future plans. Review Dirt Bikes’s company history, organization chart, products and services, and sales and marketing in the Introduction to Dirt Bikes (Please see Dirt Bikes Running Case folder posted on the Course Modules area). Then prepare a report that addresses these questions: (The length of your answer should be from roughly three or four sentences to a couple of paragraphs for each questions listed below).
- What are the company’s goals and culture?
To build off road dirt bikes using high quality parts from specialist manufacturers all over the world. The company is trying to distinguish itself from the rest of the market by building bikes using parts from various companies. Their company culture is one where a “family atmosphere” is promoted and teamwork and friendship between employees is promoted and fostered.
- What products and services does Dirt Bikes U.S.A. provide? How many types of products and services are available to customers? How does Dirt Bikes sell its products?
Enduro and Motocross bikes (4 different models) 2 models for the Enduro and 2 for the Motocross. The company provides a parts and warranty for the bikes and has corresponding
departments to handle each of these business objectives. The sales of bikes are handled not by Dirt Bikes USA but by distributors located across the United States. Internationally there are also independent distributors in Europe selling the dirt bikes. Repairs are also handled by the certified dealers.
- How many employees are managers, production workers, or knowledge or information workers? Are there levels of management?
Depending on how you classify management, there are two top level management CEO and COO/President; 120 production workers broken up into Design and Engineering (6), Parts (4), Service (10), Shipping and Receiving (5), and Manufacturing (81?); with five (5) Sales and Marketing personnel; and ten (10) working in various roles in corporate administrative roles. According to the information provided there are 3 tiers of management 1. CEO/COO 2. Production, Sales, Administration 3. Breakdown of various production departments: Parts, Shipping and Receiving, Manufacturing, Service, Design and Engineering.
