1. Values are the foundation of the restaurant. Hospitality, service, community, and humility are the most obvious of values displayed by Mrs. Scott who is currently the owner and head of the family. The book states that she “moves through the restaurant inquiring about individual needs…always with a smile,” which exemplifies her hospitality and service.
Additionally, Mrs. Scott (through Drexler’s) gives to local community organizations such as the Boy Scouts. She has also sponsored youth camping trips and trips to the local amusement park for children in the community.
Though Drexler’s has grown profitable over the years and one of Mrs. Scott’s two sons is an ex-NBA player, they have maintained their humble roots. It would be unfathomable for many businesses to stay in a neighborhood that is not known for much and is, according to the book, considered to be “run down”. By not wavering in their devotion to the community, their clients, and quality of food Mrs. Scott and her two sons show that Drexler’s is “in the neighborhood and of the neighborhood.”
2. Drexler’s is indeed an effective organization. They have a continuous stream of business that is powered by a loyal clientele. They shut their doors for six months (six months!) in order to expand their building and were welcomed by exponentially more customers once they re-opened their doors. As a business they have expanded not only their building but also their operations, they offer catering services as well. According to the book, Drexler’s has had an increase in business every year.
What was once a local BBQ joint is now a place that residents from outside of the Third Ward will commute to; that’s saying something! A business that is profitable year after year, has a loyal clientele, displays their values in daily operations, and supports the local community is indeed an effectively run
