The purpose of a mission statement
The mission statement is a sentence or a short paragraph which reflects the details of an organization’s core purpose, identity, value and principal business aims. It provides a full image of an organization or people goals, framework, strength… and gives a clear direction when a company has to make decision or solve its problem. It also inspires all the employees, owners, customers, partners of a company or an organization.
How to create a strong mission statement
Organizational mission statement
According to Covey (1989), an effective mission must be a clear, concise declaration about your business strategy. It specifies the reason for the organization and what sets it apart from the competition and other similar organizations.
In addition, a powerful mission statement should:
- Be easy to remember.
- Inspire and motivate your team.
- Guide your people’s actions.
- Anchor company’s brand promise and values.
- Using vibrant, exciting words.
- Be meaningful to leadership, employees, potential hires, and customers.
Personal mission statement
In his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Restoring the Character Ethic”, Covey (1989) states that a personal mission statement should focus on what you want to be (character) and to do (contributions and achievements) and on the values or principles upon which being and doing are based. Besides, it takes deep introspection, careful analysis, thoughtful expression, and often many rewrites to produce it in final form.
